CECAFA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP: Nabweteme Bags Brace To Hand Uganda Their Maiden Title
Uganda Crested Cranes wrote history this evening by beating Burundi and emerging victorious in the 2022 Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) Women Senior Championship for the first time.
George Lutalo’s guns defeated Burundi 3-1 in the final of the tournament played at FUFA Technical Center in Njeru on Saturday evening.
Sandra Nabweteme bagged a magical brace while Fazilah Ikwaput was on target as Uganda Crested Cranes completed the tournament unbeaten and eventually got crowned as queens of CECAFA.
Joelle Bukuru scored a consolation goal for Gustave Niyonkuru’s charges as they missed an opportunity to be crowned champions of the show-piece.
Uganda took an early lead through Nabweteme when she tapped home for a 1-0 just two minutes from kickoff.
Lady Doves striker Fazilah Ikwaput bagged her sixth goal of the tournament after doubling the lead at the stroke of the interval as Uganda Crested Cranes took a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Four minutes from break Burundi pulled one back through Joelle Bukuru with a beautiful strike from outside the box for a 2-1.
Nabweteme rubbed salt into the wounds of Burundi with a third goal and her second on 90+1 minutes, tapping home for a 3-1 win.
It was a historic victory for Uganda Crested Cranes who became champions of the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship for the first time in history.
