Vipers Outclass Calvary To Reach Uganda Cup Semi Finals
StarTimes Uganda Premier League entity Vipers Sports Club thrashed Calvary Football Club 4-1 in the Stanbic Uganda Cup quarter finals played at St Mary’s stadium on Friday.
Yunus Sentamu and Abubaker Lawal scored a brace each to hand Vipers SC a spot in the semi-finals of 2022/23 Stanbic Uganda Cup.
Junior Andama bagged a consolation goal for the FUFA Big League entity the Horizon Stars who bowed out of the tournament.
The Venoms started the better side and got the opener through Yusuf Sentamu’s brilliant free-kick just 9 minutes from kickoff.
Seven minutes later Abubakar Lawal doubled the lead for the hosts following a brilliant interplay between Garcia Mpongo and Yunus Sentamu.
Sentamu then completed his own brace and the third for the Venoms with a wonderful curl into the top right corner in the 19 minutes.
Lawal could have added the fourth but his effort from point-blank range was well saved by custodian Sukuru Hadki in the 25 minutes.
In the 38th minute, Karim Ndugwa thought he had added the fourth but his goal was ruled out for offside.
Before Andama Junior pulled one back for Calvary FC from a well taken free-kick after Ochen Emmanuel was fouled close to 18 yard box by Rogers Torach just two minutes to break as Vipers took a 3-1 lead at the interval.
After the break, Abdul Lawal completed the damages and his own brace after converting from a spot kick when Milton Karisa was brought down in the forbidden area as Vipers SC held on for a 4-1 win.
Victory saw Vipers SC became the second team to progress to the Semi-Finals after Police FC while Calvary FC joined BUL FC as the second team to be knocked out of the show-piece.
Vipers who are in their quest for a third consecutive final and third in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League log standings with 32 points from 17 games are back in action on Wednesday 19th April when they visit UPDF FC at Bombo Military Ground in their next league encounter.
While Calvary FC, 5th in the StarTimes FUFA Big League on 36 points from 24 games are back in action in WestNile derby on Tuesday 18th April as they visit Adjumani Town Council in their next Big League encounter at Paridi stadium.
