StarTimes Uganda Premier League champions Vipers Sports Club progressed to the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time in history after shocking TP Mazembe 4-2 on aggregate in the second preliminary round encounter played at Stade TP Mazembe on Saturday evening.
Having played to 0-0 draw in the first preliminary round at St Mary’s Stadium in Kampala, the Venoms went ahead to defeat TP Mazembe 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in the normal time to become the second Ugandan club to reach to the group stage of the premier continental championship.
Bright Anukani, Dissan Galiwango, Ashraf Mandela and Olivier Osomba converted their penalties to hand Vipers SC a place in the next round of the continental show-piece.
Luzolo and Issama converted for TP Mazembe while Tandi Mwape and Glody Likonza missed their penalties for the hosts as they bowed out of the tournament.
Victory means the Vipers SC join KCCA FC as the second club from UPL to reach the group stage of the CAF CL. the Kassasiro boys made it in 2018 after defeating Ethiopian side St. George SC 1-0 in the first round courtesy of the only goal from Mummad Shaban.
The Venoms are now guaranteed USD 550,000 (2.1BUGX) in the CAF Champions League Group Stages ,a fate they’ve hit at a dead end for the last two outings against Enyimba and CS Constatine in 2016 and 2019 respectively.
