Nigeria Coach Resigns After AFCON Exit
Augustine Eguavoen has vacated his role as head coach of the Nigerian national team after his side crashed out of Africa Cup of Nations at the round of 16 stage on Sunday.
The 56-year-old stepped down as the interim head coach on Sunday night immediately after they were eliminated by Tunisia in Cameroon.
Youssef Msakni scored the only goal of the clash as the Carthage Eagles defeated the Super Eagles 1-0 to progress to the next round of the campaign.
The defeat has seen Eguavoen’s short-lived stint as Nigeria head coach come to an end after he took over from Gernot Rohr in an interim capacity in December 2021.
Eguavoen announced that he would be stepping back into the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) technical director position during a post-game press conference.
“What happens next is that I’m the interim coach and technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation,” he said, according to the Daily Post.
“I will go back to my position and allow the NFF (to) make a decision on the way forward.”
Eguavoen had led the Super Eagles to three straight wins against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau in the AFCON group stage.
He stepped in after Gernot Rohr was sacked last December
However, the NFF announced Jose Peseiro as the new permanent coach before the AFCON kicked off.
The Super Eagles will face Ghana in March in two World Cup playoff matches to decide one of the 5th African slots at the tournament to be played in Qatar.
